I must say, I am rather impressed by the capabilities added to Lightroom. The new Custom Modes and New Right Hand Cutter tools are great additions. However, there are other things that Lightroom could have done better. As for the UI changes, they are subtle, but I would have liked to have seen them more visible when working with Lightroom’s menus. Some of the added functionality could have been grouped under a menu that would have made it easier to find them. For example, the “Local Adjustments” section has been moved from the “Edit > Defaults” menu. To me, this is an example of poor execution. Maybe it’s my cynical side, that dislikes the idea of making a move. With apologies to any real Philadelphia Eagles fans out there, it isn’t just because of the rather comical name. Obviously, I am used to seeing menus hand-picked and placed on their own tabs. Moving the “Local Adjustments” functionality under the “Edit” menu just doesn’t really work. Many Lightroom users may – quite understandably – not care where one particular tool is. That is why I’d like to see the search feature still work even when menus are placed on tabs. By doing so, all functionality is still available for all users identically.

There are two things I would have liked to have seen happen with Lightroom 5. Firstly, I would have liked to have seen Adobe leave both Lightroom and Photoshop, and instead develop an all-purpose RAW converter/organizer. Then, Adobe could have integrated that in all future Creative Suite releases. This would have made it possible to transfer images between Lightroom and Photoshop without worrying about missing functionality, and the integration could have been made to work seamlessly between the two products. Ultra-sharpening has a particular place in the editing chain, and there is no reason why both tools should not be used as such. More often than not these days, we are faced with the need to use both for editing raw images – regardless of whether or not it is the final result. Other users may want to use only one product and would therefore miss out on getting the best out of the other if they had to use both. Using both Lightroom and Photoshop was a good idea, but one that has been ignored in Lightroom 5.
