They work like an antenna that lets you walk the edges of the image, showing a graded effect depending on layer depth. This is a very useful tool, but it has two main limitations. First, only the top layer is exposed. You can use the Viewer to sort the images by a different layer so that if a moving object is moving over a layer that is editing in the background, you may recognize the error when it’s too late. Second, a layer mask cannot edit an image the same way that a layer itself does. Adobe refers to this as creating a “blind spot”. Layer masks are useful if you are working with the layers, or in other words, in an image that you are editing. Once you are done editing, you can use the Layer Mask tool to hide the layer until you need to use it again.

Selecting an individual layer will bring up the Layers Panel so that you can easily edit the different parts of the image. Now, with a much more streamlined UI, when you get a crash, the application will exit and when you reopen it it will load the state where you left it and continue working.
