In August of that year, when the prison opened, state officials expected to have to release about 2300 inmates to make way for a flood of new inmates. Instead, only 1200 of those inmates were moved, and roughly half of them were transferred to other state prisons. In 2003, the state operated the Nevada State Prison in Carson City, the Nevada State Penitentiary in Las Vegas, the Central Nevada Correctional Facility in Primm, and the Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Gerlach.
