Mr Gates told Business Insider: “The danger of someone who appeals to the worst angels of our nature being in charge of nuclear weapons is pretty high.”

“The US has already made a big hole in the theory that they have a great democracy. You don’t need to look further than Trump appealing to what’s ugly,” he added.

Mr Gates said he believed in the power of America’s system “even if it goes against the odds”.

“But we’re in trouble when it’s a candidate that appeals to what’s ugly rather than what’s good.”

Mr Gates said: “It’s not right, what he’s done.”

Mr Trump won the US presidential election last week against Hillary Clinton, who ran on a campaign promise to stand up to the billionaire tycoon.
